The Standmaidens

Standmaidens is a term coined to describe the mysterious impostors standing in for the more recognizable handmaidens. While there has been some debate as to when Standmaidens were actually used, they can clearly be seen in The Phantom Menace. When the newly elected Chancellor Palpatine returns to Naboo, he receives congratulations from Queen Amidala. At a certain point, two enigmatic figures can be seen clad in yellow handmaiden gowns.

Certain Expanded Universe sources claim that Amidala has thirteen handmaidens. It is unknown whether the two Standmaidens seen are meant to represent additional bodyguards or replace the familiar ones.
