OOOhh, watch it there, Hernalt!

"Getting to their bottoms" seems somehow...
uncouth, at least at this point in time...

I'll tell you though, the Episode I Insider's Guide CD-R is no d@mn help. Boy did these characters get short shrift in there...

Piett, your mind is So...

You're telling me! Visual Dictionary has this dippy little shot of Yane, but her hood's pulled down so far it makes her look like a midget.

What do you think of the Handmaiden in the crushed green velvet robe standing behind Padawan Anakin at the end? I want to know who thinks the odds are on her being Kiera Knightly as Sabe-as-Handmaiden. I'd be willing to put $ down it isn't - I think it's Yane, Candice Orwell. The Handmaiden's face is much less austere and angular than Knightley's. Don't get me wrong - Knightly's alllll there.

What the heck, I'll go ahead and put my vote in. In descending order of name favorite-ism:

1. Padm - very serene and peaceful
2. Sab - Obi Quiet is right, it's quite a seductive name. And it (proverbially!) rolls off one's tongue.
3. Eirtae - very regal
4. Rab - nice, but I wish it didn't rhyme with Sab.
5. Yan - sounds too much like Yanni
6. Sach - sounds too much like the word for how women walk...

Going on "hormonal responses" (I hope I've got all the names and faces matched up)... in descending order of attractiveness in my opinion:

1. Sab - basically perfect
2. Padm - near perfect
3. Rab - dark, exotic features
4. Eirtae - lovely, but nothing too extraordinary
5. Yan - lovely, but nothing too extraordinary
6. Sach - nose. Bad nose.

From what Hernalt wrote before I was under the impression that she was the handmaiden behind Anakin in the last scene, but now there appears to be some doubt. I'm curious as to what the person I named myself after looks like!

Oh to answer the question I like the names Padm and Yan best.

A midget? Really? I think I'm too tall to use the name then

I'm sorry to bother you more but can you tell me what page her picture is on. Is it on the handmaiden page? I flipped through the book in the store but didn't buy it. I paid attention to the handmaiden page and thought for some reason that Yan wasn't pictured.

I know what Sab, Rab, Eirta, Sach, and Padm look like, but not Yan! I must know!
I must know every little fact about TPM!

I was hoping that Yan was indeed the handmaiden behind Anakin. Then I would be able to connect a face which each name. And then I could stop paying so much attention to the handmaidens when I watch the movie and pay more attention to OB1 and QGJ like any proper Star Wars Chick should (sorry wrong forum)

I have a comment and a question.

Comment: My younger brothers have started collecting the Star Wars Widescreen cards. These cards have pictures of actual scenes from the film. On several of them, you can clearly see the Queen's handmaidens, especially Eirtae and Rabe. They just started collecting, so I haven't seen a lot of the cards so far. Unfortunately, the one with a shot of Yane in it has her hood down yet again. This mystery of Yane may never be solved.

Question: Since Sofia Coppola plays Sache in the Palpatine hologram scene, does that mean someone else plays Sache in the scene when the Jedi rescue the party from the droids? I'm assuming the scenes were filmed on separate days. I saw the film again last night, and this thought popped into my head. I thought if anyone would know it would be you guys.

Yane of Naboo: just a suggestion to be friendly, but maybe you should change your name to Eirtae, since she is the tallest of all the handmadiens. Just an observation.

<Handmaiden Announcer>Thanks, Rebel. I'd have to say... Handmaiden Watching has Really picked up in the last few weeks. And it's About time. There Is only so much you can get out of 3,437,588,135,345,001 pictures of Natalie Portman.

So! The big question: Is Eirtae the tallest Handmaiden? Well, I won't restate the obvious - that the handmaidens were each selected for being virtually identical to the Queen, most notably in height. The TPM Visual Dictionary has two pictures which conspicuously show Eirtae standing. On page 27 is the photo of Eirtae and Rabe with Amiadala in the gowns they wore for the pre-Senate conference with Palpatine. Although Rabe appears just shy of an inch taller than Eirtae, we have to remember that Eirtae is inclining her head downward, and may very well be concealing some extra height. For now I'd have to say they're Just About Even. The smaller, oval picture on page 27, where the caption "Rabe" is actually pointing to the Handmaiden Eirtae (and vice versa), has all four of the other Handmaidens at virtually the exact same height, or at least within an inch of each other.

Now, This just in from Yane of Naboo: Where's Yane? She's in the small oval picture just mentioned, page 27, and properly captioned as "Yane". She has apparently almond-aspect eyes that promise to look. Pretty good, once we get a good shot. Thanks, Yane of Naboo.

Oh wait! This just in from Giantino: Is Sache played by someone Other than Sophia Coppola when en route to Camp 4? No, Sir! Check out the same small oval picture, page 27: Sache's squinty eyes and higher-set lips DO match those of Sophia Coppola! And that's Also Sophia Coppola standing in the back of the small oval picture at the Bottom of page 27, somewhat behind Amidala and looking down. Here she is, for comparison:

Thanks, Giantino. And Feel Free to post images of any of your brothers' widescreen cards!

Back to you, Rebel.</Handmaiden Announcer>

Thanks for that clarification, Hernalt. You do know your handmaidens. I'll have to pay close attention to Sache during the escort scene when I see the film again on Wednesday. I'd love to post scans of the cards, but we don't have a scanner. Sorry.

Okay, on to my next handmaiden discovery. My sister downloaded the 15 second Obi-Wan commercial from a webpage. Ali called me over, and low and behold the last scene in the commercial is from the Parade. On the left hand side of the screen with the smiling Obi-Wan (a great shot ), you can see a handmaiden's face. Well, just over half her face, but I think she is the one who is standing behind Anakin. The one we are debating the identity of: Yane or Sabe. I realize this is a small clue, but handmaiden images are few and far between. Perhaps someone can capture the image and post it for debate. Just a thought.

But, alas still no good pic of Yan.
Poor Yan and Sach, they really got shortchanged in the book. Just one teeny tiny picture. Of course, I know what Sophia looks like but Yan remains a mystery.
Someone must get a picture from the Obi-Wan commercial. This cannot remain unsolved. Yan reveal yourself! (Sorry I'm in a very silly mood)

Hi Leia!
What I really wonder is why Yane and Sache were left behind in the first place. Perhaps to reassure the Naboo that the Queen would return?

Moriah, I had heard somewhere that Yane was too young. It's not in the Visual Dictionary, I don't think it's in the novelization, but I will check the Amidala Journal. Sache would obviously portray a Handmaiden younger than Sophia Coppola's 24 years; perhaps if she wasn't supposedly 'too young' herself she just stayed to keep Yane company, as they Were a tight-knit group.

Are there any verified pictures of Candice Orwell on the 'net to compare this with?

It's a real shame that these commercials are cut down to 1.85:1 from TPM's original 2.35:1... we'd have the handmaiden's full face available if it weren't cropped.

On present evidence, I say the handmaiden with Ewan looks a little more American than Kiera, and maybe a little older also... and her eyes don't look quite right. I'm leaning toward Yan.

Thanks, Varrice. Never too much Rabe. Her best profile is from the left, such as on pg 27 of the Visual Dictionary; she exudes exotica - especially in her shot in the Amidala 16 Month calendar. (.....could you post that???... ....)

It's a crying shame there's nothing on Candice Orwell. All she gets so far is mentions in the cast on TPM sites. That'll change eventually... But she's a UK actress just like Christina da Silva, Kiera Knightley, and Friday Wilson. (Portman being Israeli, Coppola Italian.) But yes, I agree the Handmaiden behind Padawan Anakin has a distinctly All-American, soft-edged, warm-featured *look*. I just cannot at this point distance it *too much* from Knightley's pics, provided we shroud Knightley's face and add warm 'under-lighting' that reduces her *angular* aspect. The only definate comparison we have for Yane, at this point, is the small oval picture on pg 27 of the Visual Dictionary, where she's captioned. But even though she's shrouded into a midget, even Her face can't be ruled out as the Green Handmaiden yet. If there's any nail on the coffin already for it being Knightley, it's these two pics by Marcel_Proust:

If I owned the Visual Dictionary and 16-month calendar, I might post the pictures of Rab you mention... but alas, I do not own them.

You're right about the handmaiden behind Padawan Anakin bearing a resemblance to Kiera. Angular is definitely the word for Knightley's face -- and the green handmaiden's cheek bones do remind one of Kiera's -- but I'm not convinced as of yet that mere underlighting could be the cause of the marked softness of the green handmaiden's features. It also doesn't help that I've never seen Kiera with a facial expression like that -- the somewhat sly, Sandra Bullock-esque smile. I guess I should invest in (pg 27 of) the Visual Dictionary for a more balanced opinion; at the moment I'm only judging upon the basis of what doesn't look like Kiera, rather than what does look like Candice Orwell.

Thanks for the link to the "favorite TPM character" voting site, Hernalt. I had to write in my vote for the Republic Cruiser Captain (my heart's other true love ) myself... my remaining votes will probably be split between her and Sab. Yeah, I'm into ballot-stuffing...
I noted on that site that they list Eirtae as "Friday L. Wilson"... I could've sworn the credits of TPM had one name or the other in quotes -- i.e. Friday "Liz" Wilson. Is Liz a nickname, a middle name, or what?

Good Pic, Varrice. The 'GreenMaiden' behind Anakin looks like Knightley more than ever when compared with marcel_proust's Excellent gallery, but in this shot we get a rounded, all-American *warmth*, nicely complimenting her *angular* shots. So I'd say 1. Sabe on the left. The following is partly to memory, partly to the small oval picture at the top of page 25 of the Visual Dictionary: 2. Eirtae, who has a *shorter*, more compact face than Rabe, is to Sabe's left, then 3. Rabe, with a longer face, (who if I recall was cheesing helplessly during the shot), then finally 4. Yane or Sache. Once again we're stuck: Candice Wilson or Sophia Coppola. And I Don't recall if it's Four or Five green hoods we see during the Disco Parade. It mau have been possible that Lucas wanted to 'frame' Amidala by retaining only four Handmaidens, two on a side. So Varrice, I'd say you got them Perfectly. (...just backwards... I think... )

Here's the info Moriah Organa of Alderaan asked: Why did Yane and Sache remain behind? The Amidala Journal page 24 says:

quote:

I signaled Sabe with my eyes, and she chose Eirate, Rabe, and me to leave Naboo with her. Yane and Sache are to stay behind. They are the youngest and newest in my service. I pray they'll be safe with Governor Bibble.

Which asks the fact that Sophia Coppola is 24, but hey... that's acting.

The Internet Movie Database will eventually begin to fill in as fans correct the injustices of the Overlooked Handmaidens: Friday Wilson is also listed as Liz Wilson. Her age can't be determined by the years of the "credited" movie titles: "Life 101", from 1995, is only possible if she wasn't *toooo* young at the time (And if she actually came over from UK to shoot an American B-grade movie - NOT!), but "Sorungeth soru", from 1967, clearly demonstrates the *indescretion* of the database search functions. Sofia Coppola's fairly busy; some object that she never got a nose-job but that's kind of a thin argument.

The Database Does reveal that my little Rabe ( ) was born in 1983, making her 16 or 17... <Han>"Do you think a Handmaiden and a guy like me...?"</han>
