Well, I did say I was an amateur, and that much was proven by the fact that I was at least 50% wrong. I'll go ahead and go along with you guys on Sab being behind Anakin, but I still think the handmaiden between Amidala and Palpatine is Eirtae, Friday Wilson. Her eyes and the shape of her face just don't point to Rab... she also seems a little bit paler. In my opinion, she looks much more like the handmaiden sitting next to Amidala in the Throne Room image posted here earlier -- Eirtae.

Interesting that the far right handmaiden (now thought to be Yan) looks shorter than the rest, since what pictures of Yan there are make her look somewhat like a midget. Perhaps she is indeed slightly shorter than the rest...

The Kiera Knightley site is getting better all the time, marcel. My only suggestion for improvement is changing the "Filography" banner to "Filmography".

Excellent! Excellent work Varrice, Hernalt, marcel, and all enthused.

May long live this thread...as long as it stays afloat, there is Justice in this universe. (Yeah, marcel, what's with all this Aurra Sing cr@p?!)

Well, I just went to that fave-character-votes site and stuffed the ballot box for Sab...

Well, I must agree that the mystery handmaiden behind Anakin looks like she is indeed Kiera(Keira)sp? Of course this doesn't help me at all, oh well. back to square one again.

I suppose it is possible that Yan looks an awful lot like Sab. So the handmaiden behind Anakin is indeed Yan. Probably not true but...

Anyway, I do not care what Yan looks like. I just want to know what she looks like. Wow, that looks like a contradiction doesn't it? What I mean is I do not care if she is a raving beauty or plain jane. I just think it odd that everyone now knows what Aurra Sing looks like without her makeup and no one seems to know a thing about this girl. Heck, if I were one of the handmaidens I'd make sure everyone knew about it and I'd beg Mr. Lucas for one fleeting insignificant close-up.

Varrice, it was from memory that I put Rabe on the right and Eirtae on the left. I saw the movie 15 times and the Disco Ball Parade 25 times. BUT that was over a month ago. So I won't feel stupid if it ends up with Eirtae on the right and Rabe inbetween her and Whoever's behind Anakin. I've been wrong before.

But to see where I'm coming from with that assessment, you need the Visual Dictionary. There's a picture at the top of page 25 that, instead of the face-on shot you linked to, angles in at 45 degrees, directly showing the profile of the handmaiden (in profile) which your link shows as between Amidala and Palpatine. This profile, I believe you would agree, would not match Eirtae's but would match Rabe's profile. Anyway, again:

Eirtae and Queen in Throneroom:

Sabe, Rabe and Padme:

Eirtae, Queen and Rabe Grrrrrrr......

Rabe, Queen and Sabe (Eirtae's standing behind Binx at the moment):

Disco Ball Parade:

Now, Now marcel_proust there's no need to be mean

I am curious though as to why certain male members of this forum love her so much IN makeup. What is it about her? Her nearly bald head? Or perhaps her big gun? (LOL that last statement made me think of something I saw once in a movie, No I won't go into details)

Well, I must say it's a mystery to me, I can understand a guy's attraction to say: Amidala or Sab, but I must admit this Aurra Sing thing has got me scratching my head.

There are a lot of jokes about men not understanding women. But sometimes I, as a women, cannot understand you men.

Sure she has a "hot" bod by the common definition but there are a million identikit, aerobicised bodies out there.

Thank you, Rebel, for purifying the Holy Handmaiden Thread with the Holy Handmaiden Votes. (The only thing wrong with Aura Sing is that fanboys jumped on her once they realized it's no longer cool to jump on Portman. I've been jumping on Rabe since Day 1 when I heard that angelic... voice. People should make a Stand. Yeah, I know www.aurasing.net and Michonne Bourriaque's glam shots weren't common knowledge till recently - but you know what I mean.) We may now proceed with our forensic study:

Sache: http://theforce.net/prequels/oldPreq/characters/sache.html Says:

quote:

Spy Reports
Jix: Way back in August Jix told us that Sache was one of the characters in the scenes shot at the Caserta Palace.
Valorum: Sofia Coppola (The Godfather Part III), daughter of George Lucas's friend Francis Ford Coppola, plays Sache, a handmaiden to the queen.

She's Italian, an actress, a screenwriter, and a director. All at 24 years old.

The shots in TPM where Sache is visible are [1] One fleeting half-glimpse in the Theed Throne room scene, sitting in the non-focused background. (I believe she's behind Sio Bibble.) [2] Decending stair at Theed Palace. (Caserta Palace, Italy - stair was carved from a solid block of stone in the 1400's.) [3] En route to Camp Four. [4]Theed Hangar, when Queen decides to go to Coruscant. (Set constructed in Leavesden Studios, England.) [5] Naboo Victory Parade can be included if someone distinctly recalls seeing ALL 5. Our picture has 4 and the odds don't favor either Yane or Sache over the other. (Outdoor Theed sets were built at Leavesden as was the Theed Hangar set which Sache was in.)

The shots in the TPM:Illustrated Screenplay where Sache is mentioned are: [1] The Theed Throne Room has all the Handmaidens BUT Sabe. The Flash Gordon News Flash has Eirtae and Sache standing behind the Queen. (The movie has the camera capturing only Eirtae, on the left.) [2] Descending stair at Theed Palace. [3] En route to Camp Four. (Visual Dictionary page 27.) [4] Theed Hangar. (Visual Dictionary page 27 - Sache's gaze being turned down may be accounted for by Screenplay and Novelization having her and Yane as crying.) [5] Naboo Victory Parade. Screenplay mentions ALL Handmaidens are present.

Excellent post, Hernalt.

What's so cool about Aurra Sing anyway? Besides the fact that she is a female bounty hunter, I wouldn't want to think of her as a personal favorite anyway. Besides, the talks on Natalie Portman has not yet ended. People are still talking about her. No kidding.

Anyway, I love Sabe and Rabe so much that I can think up a list of words starting with S and R that can peak your interest. It's so good.

My next challenge to the Handmaiden Panel is to verify the identity of the Handmaiden on the right of the following 'Return to Naboo' image: (I believe it to be none other than Sabe.)

And Knightley, courtesy Marcel:

TPM: Movie Storybook page 43: A shot from the same 'Return to Naboo' scene (Rabe, Amidala, Sabe-I-think).

TPM: The Making of Episode I page 87, upper: An opposing shot from same 'Return to Naboo' scene with (who I think is) Eirtae, behind Binx.

TPM: The Making of Episode I page 87, lower: Closeup of Eirtae in her 'Palpatine Conference' Gown.

And the Holy Grail:

TPM: The Making of Episode I page 89: An out-focused Handmaiden behind Lucas, but Very visible, with full face. Could This be our long lost Yane? She ain't Sache, she ain't Sabe, she ain't Padme and she ain't Rabe! It's Either Eirtae or Yane! We just need a vote that it Isn't Friday Wilson and we got Candice Orwell!

I go along with all your identifications of these various handmaidens.

Now...p89 of the "Making of..." book, the blurry out-of-focus face behind GL is not that of Eritae,it's the wrong shape.

I personally cannot totally rule out the idea that it could be Sophia Coppola, she has the same long, thin features. However if you are confident that it's not Sophia then you have your Yane

Rotten picture though

NB There is a new "6 Degress of Separation" feature on my Kiera Knightley website that links all of Kiera's movies with TPM in a few short steps.

For the "Return to Naboo" scene, my vote goes for Sabe being on the right hand side of the screen. I think Eirtae is behind Jar Jar because of her thinner lips and pale skin, and the one on the right just looks like Sabe.

Regarding TPM: The Making of Episode I page 89, I have seen that picture on the back of one of the widescreen cards. It is captioned as Lucas giving instructions on the Senate Landing Set. That statement coupled with the fact that the arm on the right side of the picture looks like Senator Palpatine, who was never in the Theed Hanger, leads me to believe it cannot be Yane nor Sache. Therefore, the handmaiden is either Padme, Rabe, or Eirtae. I think it is Eirtae because her eyes look blue, blurred as they are.

I've posted a few times, and have yet to vote on my favorite handmaiden. It was a tough choice, but I have reached a decision. Rebel Operative, could you please count another vote towards Rabe, please? Thank you.

This Handmaiden Panel Delivers.

Last challenge:

TPM: Making of Ep I page 56: Can anyone surmise who the chick is in the white shirt?
The guy on Her right appears to be Silas Carson, who would be NuteGunray during filming, and on Her left looks pretty much like Oliver Ford Davies, Sio Bibble, who Is somewhat taller than Sabe. But is that little thing in the middle really Sabe? Or someone standing in for her?

Sorry, I can't help you guys on any of the photos you mentioned. I only own one book: the visual dictionary. And may I reiterate(did I spell that right am I even using it in the right context??) that it is a very good purchase. It has fantastic photos. I have started a fan art using the front cover image of Amidala. Does anyone else dabble in fan art. That is the main reason I am seeking out a photo of Yan. I want to do a picture of each handmaiden and eventually(I hope) a rendering of each major character.
I know this really doesn't mean much to any of you. But I want to keep this thread on the first page. So I'm posting. Well next time I am in the bookstore I'll check out the book. page 89 was it?

Well, Of Course we care what you're doing Yane of Naboo! I started doing little icons which I dubbed fanpic, but I probably won't go farther than that. The Holy Grail, for all of us, is an actual picture of Yane, from Anywhere. Page 89 of TPM: Making of Ep I has Palpatine's arm. That pretty much eliminates her as Yane unless she was Standing In for Eirtae during this picture as Lucas was goofing around, pretending to direct. So Yane's not ruled out, especially if they simply did principal photography of all scenes with the handmaidens in Those gowns on a Few certain days, where Lucas would need Everybody there, Just in Case they needed to shoot something different than planned. Yane being There, on that Day, is entirely likely. But her being the blue-eyed out-focused Handmaiden is unlikely. So the search (or wait) continues... We'll probably just have to wait until DVD/video release so some people can do screen captures. Even then, Yane NEVER got a face shot unless it was three or four frames long, about 1/6 to 1/4 of a second. I think Yane of Naboo needs a hug...

I had an idea this afternoon. My brother asked to borrow some of my Star Wars Insider magazines, so we spent a few hours reading together. A feature in each issue is called Star Wars Universe. In it, a writer named Scott Chernoff interviews supporting actors from throughout the saga. He did articles on General Madine, Admiral Motti, and Mon Mothma recently. At the end of each interview, he asks for readers to e-mail their suggestions if they would like to see a particular supporting actor interviewed. Maybe if we all sent off an e-mail we could get our handmaidens interviewed and unlock the mystery of the Sith. They always post pictures, too! His address is SWuniverse@aol.com

Is this a good idea or am I just overobsessing?

Done. Now all you guys should, if you want to put pressure where pressure can put pressure... if you know what I mean...

In my email I basically asked for him to consider interviewing Kiera knightley, by dint that she's been practically ignored for her pivotal role in TPM. There is NOTHING wrong with this idea of petitioning him. He has nothing better to do right now than interview the Handmaidens! Or... Knightley, at the very least.

Done.

As for the second-to-last challenge, i.e., who's the HM on Amidala's left in the above pic...not to cop out, but the shot is too vague to really tell. Besides, I'm biased toward Sab anyway.

You know, there's one shot in TPM which would satisfy any Handmaiden enthusiast here; it would make a great "snapshot", or trading card, or still-img, but I guess we'll have to wait 'til March and place our faith in marcel, Captain of the VidCaps for it!

It takes place during the strategy-meeting between the Naboo and the Gungans, just before the Gungan army emerges and marches...during the discussion amidst QGJ, Amidala, Panaka, R2, etc, the camera cuts away to a shot of Anakin (the lil' Casanova!) standing with all the handmaidens in a row, all in their hoodless battle-uniforms (Sabe in the Queen Battle dress get-up of course).

Anyone know what I'm talking about here, and have you seen it reproduced as a still somewhere?

Under development: The Kiera Knightley: Phantom Actress website!

Up with the Handmaiden Panel!

Vague? That's why we have a Panel. We Will get to the bottom... of these images. Good work on your frontpage! And yes, the shot you mentioned is what I have lived on since my fifth viewing... Rabe's dark skin tone... her long, elegant face... dark eyes... *ears*... her inclined head... The memory of that... voice. Excuse me. I have to go get some water.

Sooo. Cult of the Handmaidens? I've been a member since TPM viewing #5. I don't see the membership growing too rapidly unless more information comes out. And the Portman Cult fanboys only begin realizing that she's not GOD at a fairly flat rate. The Aurra Sing Cult will start growing at a fairly good clip, since she's as close as EU-wannabeinthemovies people can get to masculinized but super-estrogened Mara Jade. <ick - i gotta go wash my brain out with soap now.>

But here's what you can do:

Episode I character most likely to develop a cult following
http://theforce.net/forum/Forum1/HTML/016106.html

The Phantom Menace Character Vote
http://www.freevote.com/booth/tpm

I never did a fanpic of Sabe. I only have the ensembles of Eirtae, Amidala and Rabe:
The escape.
Conference with Palpatine.
Senate Appearance.
The Return. (No Sabe, for continuity - but I guess I could.)

And Yane of Naboo, you have my respect for being a chick groupie on what would normally be a guys' club.

Wait, I'm a chick groupie too! Everyone calls me Andy so I understand the mistake, but my given name is Andrea. My favorite characters in films usually tend to be strong females, and I've loved Princess Leia my whole life. What I love about the handmaidens, and Amidala, is there's more there than just pretty faces. They're smart, tough, and can hold their own even with Jedi Knights.

I went over to the freevote booth, and voted for some of our handmaidens. Rabe is the highest on the list, but she's still losing to the Opee Sea Killer for Sith's Sake. Everyone go over and vote!

My brothers, sisters, and I are going to see Episode I on Tuesday night. If anyone wants me to look for anything in particular regarding our handmaidens, just let me know.

Yeah, you can't forget Giantano (or should I call you Andy? Do you care what I call you. ) and me. The brave females of this thread. (of course, we're fans of the ladies for different reasons than you um gentlemen. I like, Andy, am a fan of any strong female character. (I'm also a fan of Adi, Depa, and Yaddle oh and Shmi, and, of course Leia)

Well, the only part of the movie that I would want you to look at is the same part as usual. The disco ball parade, behind Anakin, is that indeed Kiera? Also can you verify that all five handmaidens are at the event. (only four are in the pic I've seen)

MTFBWY always
