Hello, members of the RHS. I am again trying to keep this thread going.

I've been reading a few threads about "what do you want to see in Episode II?" (If I were a little less lazy I would provide some links to them) No one seems to care very much whether or not the illustrious HMs are in the next prequels! I'm assuming Amidala will still be the queen of Naboo in the next episode, therefore the HMs should be in it as well. BUT is it possible that they won't? I remember thinking to myself recently that I hope that Yan is given more camera time in the next ep. but then it occurred to me: It's possible that A: the HMs could be in the ep. but played by different actresses B: the HM will not be in the ep at all.
My opinion is this: IF Amidala is still the queen in Ep. II (and I'm assuming she is) then the HM must be in the ep as well.
The real problem I can foresee is that the HMs are played by different actresses (for whatever reason) But we know what most of the HMs look like so would they just give them new names? (which makes no sense, why would Amidala want new inexperienced HMs?)
(OK, catch your breath, you're getting a little too obsessed)

On another note, I've decided to start an "Ode to the Handmaidens" art work. Sadly Yan will only be represented with a rendering of that pathetic little photo in the visual dictionary.

Yan
oh yeah...May the force be with you, always.

Well said, Red One. I sincerely hope we do see all the handmadiens in Episode Two.

Yane of Naboo: I feel bad for neglecting you during your time here. So I'll post a response now....

About your comment forseeing different actresses playing the handmadiens in Episode Two, I really don't agree with it. Sorry. I mean there is an age difference of ten years between the two films, but there is not much difference in looks. Basically, they will look the same still. I think that there was a similar arguement made earlier when we thought that a different actress would play Queen Amidala in Episode Two. The fact is already known that there would be a different Anakin Skywalker in the next episode, but I still think that Natalie Portman should still play the role of Amidala. There is not much difference between the ages of 14 and 24. Just an observation here, Yane of Naboo.

Thanks for the postings, everyone. Back to the top now....

I was mostly just thinking too much about something that <gasp> really doesn't mean much in the whole scheme of things. (not to mention I was avoiding reading my assigned chapters for my courses)
I do agree that it is unlikely that new handmaiden characters will be created for the next episodes. BUT it is possible that new actresses will protray the current characters. (think of the stand-ins that some have seen in TPM) When you think of it, not many people really pay too much attention to the HMs. Many, I'm guessing see them as just more background characters (which-well they are really except for Sab)
Will the HMs have a larger role? I doubt it. Does it matter if the roles are played by different actresses? Well, certainly Sab, Rab, Eirta, are recognizable but if they wear the usual HM garb throughout their scenes who would be the wiser? Beyond the esteemed members of the RHS?
Does the average fan even know their names let alone which name goes with each face? So does any of this really matter to anyone but myself?
After spending some time thinking about the above I've come to a few conclusions: well...um...anyway...oh yeah: I've spent way to much time thinking about the above.

Yan I've got to spend less time at this board. I'm spending too much time contemplating this stuff. I've never thought about SW this much before I found this board. I must read my cultural anthropology book and finish typing out my play. I must resist the power of... Sorry I sort of zoned out for a minute there.

Love the fanpic, Hernalt. By the way, what's an RP chat?

Yan, as a teacher I'm telling you...do your classwork! I really hope you get a scanner soon so we can see your handmaiden artwork.

As for our HM returning for the next episode, I'm a tad worried as well. I think the handmaidens were created to add to the Sab/decoy plot. They did get fleshed out along the way as the Queen's protectors and companions, but I'm wondering if Lucas will have use for the ladies now that the decoy deception has been revealed. My guess is that Amidala will still be queen of Naboo at least through the second prequel. I see no reason why he would exclude the handmaidens.

I do hope the same actresses reprise their roles. Wouldn't it be great if we could actually see the face of Yane! Evidence supports them being asked back. I've read a few online interviews with some extras who, I think, portrayed Naboo Guards. They mentioned many of the same extras were going to be in the second film. And Lucas did have the same actor, Denis Lawson, play the great Wedge in all three original films. Everyone cross their fingers for the next couple of years!

Don't forget to vote for the handmaidens at http://www.freevote.com/booth/tpm

And remember...if it has to do with Star Wars, there's no such thing as being obsessive!

MTFBWY,
Andy

At the start of EpII, Amidala could still be Queen. It's likely she would keep the same Handmaidens for her entire Term, which couldn't last more than a few years. She might have hired/enlisted some additional Handmaidens, but it's unlikely it would be a whole new batch. The Handmaidens were essentially drafted to start with. For extenuating circumstances, one or two Might be allowed to leave the Queen's service while she's still in office. And they'd all Obviously return to their previous life once her term was concluded.

How does everyone feel about Beru's lines being those of an older Sabe, one who Knew Anakin from the very start of his relationship with Anakin. Something could happen to Amidala's family during her term, her brother Owen, perhaps orphaned, is taken to live with Obi-Wan's family as a foster-child/brother. Long after, he marries the ex-Queen's primary Handmaiden. Events on Naboo cause turmoil; Tatooine is close by and perhaps Owen and Sabe prefer to stay Close to Naboo, while Owen continues his trade of farming, albeit as a moisture farmer. Events occur involving Anakin, Obi-Wan and the Clone Wars. After time, Obi-Wan drops a young child in Owen's lap. Sabe may have been so innocent as to always look past Anakin's (whatever). The kind of hopeful woman that could say with a smile, "He's just like his father." Whereas Owen, who refused to be rused, could reply grufly, "That's what I'm afraid of..."

Sabe turns into Aunt Beru!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooOOOOOOooooOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I want to see Sabe side by side, shoulder to shoulder with Amidala "at the head of a great army" going into battle to save Naboo from some enemy.

The Naboo will be crushed and destroyed but Amidala will escape at the last when Sabe sacrifices herself in some act of decoy-related heroism.

A fitting end for such a noble and brave character.

Greetings RHMS Members. It is I, your Lieutenant, but now with more of those red and blue square insignia-thingies on his uniform!

Yan of Naboo -- that's OK! We're here for you.

Hernalt -- Hmmm! Provocative conjecture there.

'twill be a long, nervous wait indeed to see if the Floral Five "make it" to Ep. II. I see no reason they shouldn't be! Especially (my) Sab -- however, you know I'm biased toward her. Lotsa plot potential which could involve her, at least (marcel -- AMEN!) I think I heard that filming will be done in Italy again -- ergo, the Theed Palace setting -- so they should come with the scenery, no? And it's a nice thought that GL (or R. Gurland at least) would give those young, upstart actresses another whirl on the big screen. AND, it would be a shame to see all that wardrobery (is that a word?) go to the archives permanently, so soon!

But . . . (cue sudden minor, worrisome chord from the string section) . . . I've said before that my faith in the GL-unit's Internal Logic Circuits is shaky at best. I mean, who would have thought in 1981 or so that in the "next" film he would kill off Fett, or pepper the scene with teddy bears?

"The Force will guide us..." -- I hope it is the Will of the Force that our -girlz will rightfully and logically appear alongside their Queen in Ep. II.

My guess: Amidala will leave Naboo early in the film, this time for good (though she doesn't intend to) -- so the HM's will appear at least briefly in the first part of the film. Hmmmmm.

IF SO . . . will they be recast? Will they be redesigned to increase toy-market saleability? Will they be re-invented as . . .

Grump, Sneez, Sleep, Dop, and Doc?

or, Posh, Bab, Scar, Sport, and Gingere?

Only time will tell!!

Greetings fellow members of the RHS!

A few weeks ago I suggested we all email Scott Chernoff of the SW Insider and ask him to interview the Handmaidens for a future issue. (SWUniverse@aol.com for those who have yet to write.) One of my friends wrote and he was kind enough to send a response back. He says he normally doesn't have time to return emails, but he had enjoyed her letter a lot. Her request was in poem form. It's very funny.

The next two interviews are Admiral Ozzel and Nien Numb, but he did say he hoped to interview Kiera Knightly in a future issue, and she was a "strong possibility." He wrote he would also keep in mind the fans' interest in the other handmaidens. I thought you would all be interested in the information.

It's great it's a "stong possibility" that Kiera will be interviewed. She should be. (maybe her interview can mention some things about the other HMs as well)

I've never posted any pictures so I thought I'd try to post a few.

for all the Sab fans

I'm sure everyone's seen this one but it's one of my favorites. (Eirta, Amidala, Rab)

I found this pic of Padm. I thought it was a good one. I'll probably use the pose in my yet to be started Ode to the Handmaidens.

I just found a new picture, but I have no idea who's the handmaiden on it. I'm sure she's not Sab, Rab nor Eirta, so she must be Yan or Sach. Here's the picture:

She looks like the handmaiden on the far right of this picture:

According to the Visual Dictionnary, this handmaiden is Yan. I'm not sure I should still trust it, though...

interesting, QGP.
can anyone ID the scene in the movie that the first pic comes from? If someone can, then was Yan of Sach even in the scene?
My knowledge of the movie is sadly lacking. I must see it again.
BTW the HM does look like Yan in the second pic, but the robes do not seem to match. the only HM robes I can recall Yan wearing are the red/orange/yellow number, and perhaps the green number during the parade scene.was she never was in the throne room scene? if so then she wore the yellow one as well. of course it's been awhile since I've seen the movie...

Yan,

I believe the first picture is from Qui-Gon's funeral. Perhaps it was taken before the CGI characters (Boss Nass, Jar Jar) were added. Since one of the handmaidens was there, I'm sure the others were as well. Actually, I think you can spot Rab behind Qui-Gon's funeral pyre twice, or maybe I'm just imagining it.

Yan did wear another gown because she was in the Throne Room scene. We see all four handmaidens in that scene, minus Sab, although the shots of the elusive two are fleeting.

I took one of my students to see the movie yesterday. The theater was almost sold out! I felt so proud. I looked closely at all the Handmaiden scenes again, and Rab does have a stand-in during the "This one's a decoy!" scene. Darn these handmaiden mind games!

Andy

Greetings RHMS members!

Good to see the excavation carrying on.

Andy -- Good Deed of the week for you, taking your student to see TPM!

That Qui-Gon's funeral picture above -- that solves the earlier query as to whether or not They were at the event. Also, I recently skimmed thru the Ep.I Illus. Screenplay book and for QGJ's funeral scene, the HM's are indeed listed as being among the dramatis personae.

But as a HMologist with a Concentrated Study in Sabica, I offer that the mystery HM in the img is not her.

"Handmaiden Yan, I presume...?"

Note also the bright daylight streaming thru the windows, even though the funeral is supposed to take place at night. Whoops.

(Side note on the scene: Ric Oli's possible eulogy: "There's Qui-Gon! He's dead! He's on fire! He's going to burn up, because he's on fire!"

Piett, your Ric Oli comments had me laughing hysterically. I can practically hear his voice saying those lines. By the way, congrats on your promotion!

I asked my friend Jorden if I could post her handmaiden poem here, and actually persuaded her to let me. This is the one Scott Chernoff replied to. I think you'll like it as much as I do.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
This is from a fan,
Who calls herself true.

Your interviews are neat,
And fun to read,
It is up to you,
To fulfill a need.

In Episode I,
We saw maidens so fair,
One was a blonde,
The others with dark hair.

They have many fans,
And they've captured each heart,
But we're having problems,
Telling them apart

Padm's the easiest one,
Since she's the most seen,
Sab's the decoy
Who pretends to be the Queen.

Ani speaks to Rab,
In his search for his love,
I'm sure Eirta could shot something,
If push came to shove.

Sach and Yan,
Are the other two,
They are hard to spot,
And that makes us blue.

The scene in the Throne Room,
Naboo is hesitant to fight,
But who's on the left,
And who's on the right?

The group is soon rescued,
By Jedi so good,
Which one has their face,
Hidden by the orange hood?

The next scenes are easy,
For more reasons than one,
But once we reach Coruscant,
It's no longer much fun.

Ani enters the chambers,
And speaks to Rab,
But are the two in the back,
Really Eirta and Sab?

The Queen heads for the Senate,
And takes along a pair,
But who was left behind,
For a breathe of fresh air?

The battle is fought,
A victory has been won,
The Chancellor arrives,
In the light of the sun.

More handmaidens are present,
Different ones we see,
We have been left,
Confused as can be.

The Disco Ball Parade,
Celebrates the end of the fight,
But which handmaiden is that
One the far left and far right?

Is there any way possible,
Any way at all,
That you could interview the handmaidens,
Maybe give them a call?

There are a total of six,
But we just need five,
We need clarification,
Often the faces don't jive.

That is the request,
That has been presented to you,
As Obi-Wan once said,
May the Force Be With You!

MTFBWY,
Andy

And -- Fantastic poem! How could Chernoff possibly refuse such a request. Pass along my commendations to your friend.

{clinking fork on glass} *Ahem*. I wish to make a formal pronouncement on the matter of the HM at Qui-Gon's Barbecue. Funeral, that is. Funeral.

The HM in question is . . . Sach, a.k.a. Sofia Copolla. "Why, praytell, General?", do you ask.

The chin just isn't right to be either Sab or Eirta. The nose just isn't right to be Rab. The forehead is too short to be Sab.
But, matching back to the below image of Sofia:

. . . something in the overall visage of her image matches back to the HM in the Crispy-fried Jedi -- erm, Funeral, scene above. I think it's in the eyebrows and cheekbones. Sofia's forehead and chin are not as pronounced as those of both Kiera and Friday. This seems to be the case with the mystery HM.

Still, I acknowledge the Unknown Quantity that is Yan. But I think I have a face-to-face match here with Sach.

i heard if you look closly in the funeral scean you can see an image of qui-gone looking over at himself. i've tried to find it but i can't.

also there is "i'll call them" ET's in the senate scean on curasaunt. there is alot of hidden things in this movie so everytime you see it there are new parts. i think lucas did it this way to make the movie hold interest until the next could arrive.

So it wasn't Yan...
Is the Visual Dictionnary wrong again? It says that the handmaiden on the right of the second picture is Yan, and I'm pretty sure it's the same handmaiden than the one at Qui-Gon's funeral.

Here are some more handmaidens pictures:

Rab, Queen and Eirta

'Been away for a while. The only HM error the Illustrated Dictionary made was transposing the captions for Rabe and Eirtae. Sache as captioned is still Sofia, Yane is still Candice. If you compare the TPM:ID Sache picture to the above Sofia photo, you get a match. As for the Funeral Scene HM, man that's looking like Sache And Yane, depending on how you look at her. But I can't be sure. Could one of the image gurus do another split-image-comparison?

That little HM in the green gown immediately above is my Rabe. You can't have her. (Notice the left sleeve of the HM to her right? That means this one Isn't Sabe, who is behind Anakin.)

The only time we get to see the handmadiens Yane and Sache are before Queen Amidala leaves with the Jedi to Coruscant and scenes after Naboo is saved from the Trade Federation. We don't see them often enough to get a clear shot of what they really look like. Shame.

This is such a great thread that I've decided to make this The Official STAR WARS Handmadien Fan Club. This clubhouse is eligible to all forum members. Our support for the handmadiens will never die. Let's make this pledge and continue this thread.

I (name), pledge my full support to ensure that this thread will continue in a fun but clean manner, in order to ensure our respect to the handmadiens whom we admire and adore.

As an official member of this thread, I will give my 100% support in order to make sure that this thread continues in a fashion that is acceptable to everyone involved.

Sorry, I'm not much at writing pledges compared to short stories.

Now back to the top we go....

Welcome back, Hernalt. I should have guessed you wanted Rabe for yourself the moment you came back here. Hmmm.

Shame for me. Well, there are other handmadiens also.

I'll take the pledge.

I Yan of Naboo, pledge my full support to ensure that this thread will continue in a fun but clean manner, in order to ensure our respect to the handmadiens whom we admire and adore. (I'm not sure that I adore any of them but...what the heck)

As an official member of this thread, I will give my 100% support in order to make sure that this thread continues in a fashion that is acceptable to everyone involved.

So is the name the Official Star Wars Handmaiden Fan Club (OSWHFC) or the Royal Handmaiden Society (RHS).

Either way count me in.

Yan who's official mission is to discover the mysterious identity of Yan, the elusive(love that word, especially the way OB1 says it) handmaiden.

BTW, Rebel Operative you mentioned short stories. Does your writing include fan fiction? If so, any way I might be able to read some? Or maybe you post on the fan fic board, I'll have to check that out sometime soon.

I'm more than happy to pledge my support to the club. This is one of the best threads around. Everyone is supportive and nice.

Rebel Operative, thanks for the poem compliment. I didn't write it, my friend did, but I'll be happy to pass it along. I'm more of a patron of the arts, so I tend to support and enjoy others' works rather than write my own.

Welcome back, Hernalt. You put my mind at ease. I saw both Yan and Sach in that picture as well, and I thought I was going crazy. I still say someone's playing mindgames with us.

And, as long as we're posting fuzzy handmaiden pictures, here's one from an earlier debate. I got it off another site, so hopefully someone else can capture a clearer image.

Who's on the left, and who's one the right? The world may never know.

MTFBWY,
And

By popular demand, Handmaidenology has extended to Club Kiera! (Which day by day I grow more and more convinced should actually be Keira.) Some familiar looking pix are now in the Photos section.

I stand by my conclusion that the HM in the above funeral scene is Sach / Sofa Coppola. Her cheekbones and eyebrows -- what I can glimpse of them -- are the major clues.

Quick stab at Photoshoppery:

And -- arrggghhh! Gotta solve the case you presented above! Won't be able to sleep otherwise.

Which scene is this? Methinks it be the one wherein young punk Anakin visits the Queen's chambers to say g'bye to Padm afore he goes before the Jedi Council. If so, I have heard before that this was an add-on scene shot late in the production (someone confirm or deny this please!). If so, then there is a strong case for
Extras to be the answer to Who They Are.

If not, then deductively the two HMs should be Sab and Eirta. But they don't look like Keira and Friday to me.

HMMmmmmm....must ponder this more...fellow Panelists, what say you...?

**Piett**
Someday, I want to be able to say, "It was worth it."
